Video games expand and iterate upon multiple genres and styles, yet very few such titles evoke gothic horror and psychological intrigue as well as Identity V, a creation from NetEase Games that offers players more than just a game; rather, it strives to be an immersive experience taking groups into a dark, twisted world filled with mystery, suspense, and a hints of the supernatural.
Identity V is an asymmetrical mobile multiplayer game set in a world inspired by the Victorian era, which grabs the players immediately with its spooky vibe. The art style of the game is a mix of gothic touches and steampunk influences, resulting in an environment that is just as visually compelling as it is disturbing. From dark alleys of an old town to grand, decaying mansions, every scene is perfectly crafted to invoke a sense of dread and wonder. The amount of time and care put into the architecture and character designs and the world in general is impressive enough that players can easily get lost in this gothic world.
At its core, Identity V is a one-versus-four asymmetrical multiplayer game. Each player takes on the role of either Hunter or Survivor. Survivors need to fix generators placed around the map to unlock exit gates, and the Hunter needs to down and kill the Survivors. From there, it's up to the characters, each with their own backstories and abilities to add even more levels of depth and complexity to the game.
No part of Identity V is more intriguing than its lore. The game’s story is embedded in everything from the characters’ dialogue to environmental details. And players discover the ugly truths behind this world through interactions and events in the game. The story follows the enigmatic “Identity V” organization that performs experiments on human souls. All the stories are linked to this organization, and just why the narrative connects. It's not all spoon-fed, the lore dribbles out over gameplay and encourages players to come out and play and connect the dots.
Another thing that stands out in Identity V is the character development. Each character has their own personality, backstory, and motivation. The survivors are not just victims, they're people with strengths and weaknesses of their own. The Hunters, on the other hand, are ambiguous and interesting villains. Engrossed in their own individual tragedies and turmoils, they are not purely evil. The character interactions help make the game slightly more than the simple premise suggests.
Identity V is also popular due to its community and social features. The community is huge, very active, and active development keeps the game from getting stale over time. New characters, maps, and updated gameplay mechanics also come in occasional events and updates. Players often team up and share tips and strategies, making the community very supportive.
Lastly, the sound design in Identity V is worth pointing out. The soundtrack of the game is haunting and atmospheric, which will induce the plot of visuals and gameplay.
