Editor's Review

As we face new challenges each day in the universe of indie gaming, MONGIL fades into an ethereal and atmospheric experience that knows no genre lines. Created by a small yet passionate team of visionaries, this title takes players on a journey that encourages not only exploration but also self-reflection. This is not a game to be part of; it is a world to experience.

MONGIL charms with its ideas as early on as when you boot the game up. The creators have designed a visual symphony combining dream-like otherworldly settings plus, an unmistakable textured style. The color palette is constantly changing, in coordination with the mental state of the protagonist and this atmospheric world. Be it neon-lit underwater caverns or drifting in a space, the graphics are done so that movement and grace come through.

The core of the gameplay is actually a sort of controlling because you do it physically and metaphorically. The controls are simple but made for creativity. Mongil, the almost nefariously vague protagonist is handled with a sort of weightlessness in players hands. Just like that, your star dive mechanic becomes instinctive through the physics engine; soaring, plunging and gliding through engines of games yet came up for interpretation artsy designs.

The first thing you need to do is exploration. This non-linear world allows a player to find hidden ways and secrets. You need to control your characters to explore and move in this vast world to find things and other characters. What is more, the game is paced really slow (which means relaxing). Here you come from a lot of high-octane action titles, and needed something different to recharge. MONGIL is this kind of slow game for you, there is no need to hurry, just explore slowly and bury yourself into the virtual word to delve, explore and discover.

All this appreciation of MONGIL would be at half-mast without mentioning its auditory opus. It is deeply rooted in the narrative, custom-crafted to align with your actions. The further down you go into the game lore, up swells and contractions of music creating an immersive soundscape that heightens isolation wonder. I call it ambient, evocative and hauntingly beautiful. You must have a try in this game.

The game does not lean heavily on exposition, telling a rather intriguing story through environmental storytelling. There are remnants of lore scattered across the globe that help assemble what happened in Mongil and why diving into a star is important. A tale about connecting, losing connection and looking for the light in shadow.

To sum it up, MONGIL is a feature of how art has been able to use video games. Which is a peaceful journey that encourages players to stop, take in their surroundings and appreciate the digital medium itself. This is a dive worth taking if you want an experience that blindsides and relaxes something of which most stay-at-home parties lack in substance. Anyway, this is a game that you should not miss, if you miss, what a pity!
