This first-person horror-puzzle adventure game places players in the role of a former employee of Playtime Co., an abandoned toy-making company. The employee revisits the factory a decade after the mysterious disappearance of its staff, setting the stage for a gripping and immersive experience.
The narrative of Poppy Playtime is driven by a blend of in-game exploration and VHS tape discoveries, which unravel the eerie backstory of the facility and its infamous toys. Right from the start, the game captivates with a creepy VHS advertisement for Poppy, a realistic doll, personalized with live-action footage that enhances the grounded horror of the story. This narrative technique evokes a sense of nostalgia, reminiscent of 90s horror aesthetics, adding depth to the storytelling and creating a more immersive atmosphere.
Players must navigate through the forsaken corridors of the Playtime Co. factory, encountering various challenges that require the use of the GrabPack. This innovative gadget functions similarly to a pair of sticky hands, extending the player’s reach to solve electrical puzzles and interact with distant objects. The gameplay revolves around piecing together parts of the factory, notably exemplified by the Make-A-Friend section, where players power up a machine to create their toy and advance to the next level.
What sets Poppy Playtime so peerless is its masterful use of sound and visuals. The game employs low lighting and grungy visuals to underscore the sense of abandonment and dread within the factory.
